The Professional Standards Division is comprised of a sergeant responsible for Police Recruit and Employee Background Investigations and Training; and a sergeant and patrol officer responsible for Crime Analysis. Full-time civilian employees are assigned to various administrative jobs. The Division also coordinates the placement of college interns within the department. All interns work in a non-compensation basis.
The Division is responsible for updating all current policies and developing new operational policies and procedures. The Division manages the Department’s involvement in the Massachusetts Police Certification and Accreditation Program. The standards for the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program are based upon national standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The selected standards impact officer and public safety, addressing high liability risk management issues, while promoting operational efficiency. The standards reflect the best professional practices in each area of police management, administration, operations, and support services. The Chelsea Police Department attained State Certification in 2003 and State Accreditation in 2010.
