Friday- The Chelsea Police Department is warning residents of an extortion scam that is targeting the Hispanic community. Four victims have recently come forward and told investigators that they received calls from person/s who state they are holding a family member against their will. They further instruct the victims that they will cause the family member serious harm unless money is sent to an unknown location through a designated Western Union service. In all cases, the victims were able to verify the safety of their loved ones and then called police.
In each incident, the calls were directed to Hispanic victims and the callers made their threats in Spanish. Police note that in each case the threats were not directed to named family members but instead the perpetrators used the words “brother, son, daughter or sister” which broadened their chance of placing fear in the victims.
Chelsea Police are asking residents if they receive any calls like these to immediately call the Chelsea Police to further investigate.
Chelsea residents are reminded they can provide information anonymously to the Police Department by calling the 24 hr Crime Stoppers TIP line at 617-466-4880 or texting the word Chelsea and then their message to tip411 (847411) from their cell phone. Anonymous web tips can also be submitted right from the Police Departments website at www.chelseapolice.com.
