Tuesday- Two Chelsea Police Officer’s quick actions led to the rescue of a distraught male trying to jump off the Tobin Bridge this afternoon. At 1:27 PM, Chelsea and State Police Units were alerted that a male was walking up the Everett Ave on-ramp onto the Tobin Bridge. A Chelsea Sergeant working a police detail in the area along with an on-duty Chelsea and State Police Unit observed the male later identified as Michael Rucker, age 49 of Texas walking quickly up the ramp.
Rucker who was walking near the safety railing then began to climb over the barrier while making statements that he was going to end his life. Both Chelsea Officers then quickly moved toward Rucker and were able to forcibly pull him back over the rail. After a brief struggle, he was secured and transported by EMS to Massachusetts General Hospital to be evaluated. One of the officers received minor injuries during the incident. The Massachusetts State Police are continuing the investigation.
