Captain Jason Farden oversees the Chelsea Police Department Professional Standard Division

The Professional Standards Division is comprised of a Lieutenant in Technical Services, Sergeant responsible for Police Recruits, Employee Background Investigations and Training; three Patrol Officers and a Civilian Analyst responsible for Intelligence, Crime Analysis and IT.  All other Full-time civilian employees assigned to various administrative jobs also fall under the Professional Standards Division.

The Division also coordinates the placement of interns within the department. All interns work in a non-compensation basis.  Interns pursuing graduate degrees (i.e. PhD, Masters) are highly desired.  However, the department also welcomes undergraduate students.  The department also has a number of paid summer positions for high school students through the summer youth employment program.

The Division is responsible for updating all current policies and developing new operational policies and procedures. The Division manages the Department’s involvement in the Massachusetts Police Certification and Accreditation Program. The standards for the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program are based upon national standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The selected standards impact officer and public safety, addressing high liability risk management issues, while promoting operational efficiency. The standards reflect the best professional practices in each area of police management, administration, operations, and support services. The Chelsea Police Department attained State Certification in 2003 and State Accreditation in 2010.
